Error fix

CloudStream “App Not Installed” or Parse Error — Every Fix

You tap the APK, Android thinks for a second, and then refuses: “App not installed” or “There was a problem parsing the package.”
This has about nine possible causes, but two account for most cases:

The wrong APK build for your device — you downloaded an ARM file for an emulator, or vice versa.

An existing CloudStream install blocking it — Android will not replace an app with one signed differently, or with an older version.

Neither is dangerous, and neither means your download was malicious.

“App not installed” vs “parse error”

They are different messages with different meanings, and knowing which one you got narrows things down immediately.

A parse error usually means the file itself is the problem. “App not installed” usually means the file is fine but something on your device is blocking it.

The fixes, in order

1

Re-download the file

Start here. It costs nothing and fixes a surprising share of cases.

  • Delete the existing file completely.
  • Download it again, and let it finish fully before opening it.
  • A download that stalls at 98% produces exactly this error.
  • Try a different browser if it keeps failing.
  • Avoid download managers that split files into parts.
2

Check the APK build

CloudStream is published as several builds, one per processor type. Using the wrong one is the most common cause on a working device.

Your deviceBuild you need
Most phones from 2016 onwardarm64-v8a
Older or budget phonesarmeabi-v7a
PC emulator or Windows Subsystem for Androidx86_64
Android TV boxes, most Firesticksarm64-v8a
Not sureUniversal

If in doubt, take the universal build. It is roughly double the size but works on everything.

How to check your device: which APK build do I need?

3

Uninstall the existing version

If CloudStream is already on the device, Android may refuse to replace it.

  • This happens when the two builds were signed with different keys.
  • It also happens when you are installing an older version.
  • Back up first — uninstalling deletes your library, history, settings and extensions. See below.
  • Long-press the app icon → Uninstall, then install the new APK.

Normal upgrades do not need this. If you are simply installing a newer version from the same source, it should install straight over the top. Needing to uninstall is a sign the two files came from different places.

4

Check your free storage

  • You need roughly two to three times the APK size free during installation.
  • Android needs working space to unpack the package.
  • Delete some files and try again.
  • Check internal storage specifically, not an SD card.
5

Enable unknown sources for the right app

The permission is per app, which catches a lot of people out.

  • Enabling it for Chrome does not enable it for your file manager.
  • Go to Settings → Security & privacy → Install unknown apps.
  • Find the app you are opening the APK from — your browser, file manager, or Downloader.
  • Turn on Allow from this source.
6

Check your Android version

  • Current CloudStream builds need Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher.
  • Check under Settings → About phone.
  • Below 5.0, no current build will install. An older CloudStream release may work, but extension support will be poor.
7

Handle Play Protect

  • Play Protect may block the install because the app is not from the Play Store.
  • Tap More details, then Install anyway.
  • If it refuses entirely, open the Play Store → profile icon → Play Protect → settings, and turn scanning off temporarily.
  • Turn it back on afterwards.
8

Fix the file extension

  • Some browsers save APKs as .bin, .zip or .apk.txt.
  • Open a file manager, rename it back to end in .apk, and install again.
  • Or download with a different browser.
9

Clear the Package Installer cache

Worth trying if nothing else has worked.

  • Go to Settings → Apps.
  • Show system apps, then find Package Installer (sometimes called Package Manager).
  • Tap Storage → Clear cache.
  • Restart the device and try again.

Before you uninstall anything

If you already have CloudStream working and you are about to uninstall it, back up first. Uninstalling wipes everything.

  • Open CloudStream → Settings → Backup → Create backup.
  • Save the file outside the app’s own folder — cloud storage, or transfer it to a PC.
  • After installing the new build, restore with Settings → Backup → Restore backup.
  • Then reinstall your extensions. The backup restores your repository list, not the extension files.

People skip this constantly and lose months of library and watch history. It takes thirty seconds.

Special case: you are downgrading

Trying to install an older version over a newer one will always fail.

  • Every Android app has an internal version code that only goes up.
  • Android refuses to replace an app with one carrying a lower code.
  • This is deliberate security behaviour, not a CloudStream bug.
  • There is no setting to override it on a normal device.

The only route is to uninstall first, which is exactly why the backup matters.

Special case: Android TV and Firestick

TV devices have their own versions of this problem.

  • Permission is per app. Enable unknown-source installs for Downloader specifically, not just generally.
  • Storage fills fast on Firesticks. Clear space before installing.
  • Older Firestick models are 32-bit — try armeabi-v7a if arm64-v8a fails.
  • Fire TV needs Developer Options enabled: Settings → My Fire TV → About, click the device name seven times.
  • Some TV file managers cannot install APKs at all. Use Downloader instead.

Guides: Android TV · Firestick

Special case: PC emulators

  • You need the x86_64 build. ARM builds usually fail outright in emulators.
  • Drag the APK onto the emulator window rather than opening it from inside Android.
  • Some emulators have an Install APK button on the side toolbar — use that.
  • If the emulator has an ARM translation layer, it may accept an ARM build, but it will be slower and less stable. Use the correct build instead.
  • Allocate more disk space to the emulator if installs keep failing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it say “App not installed”?
Usually the wrong APK build for your processor, a signature clash with an existing install, a downgrade attempt, or insufficient storage.
Is this a virus warning?
No. It is Android refusing to install the package, not a malware detection.
What is a parse error?
Android could not read the file at all. Usually a corrupted download, a renamed file, or an Android version that is too old.
Do I have to uninstall my current version?
Only if the builds are signed differently or you are downgrading. Normal upgrades install straight over the top.
Will uninstalling delete my library?
Yes, completely. Back up first.
Which APK build should I download?
arm64-v8a for most phones, x86_64 for emulators, universal if you are unsure.
Why does the universal build work when the others do not?
It contains code for every processor type, so it cannot be the wrong architecture.
How much free space do I need?
Roughly two to three times the file size, on internal storage.
Play Protect keeps blocking it. Is the file unsafe?
Play Protect warns about anything not distributed through the Play Store. Verify the file’s SHA-256 hash instead: how to verify your download
My file downloaded as .bin. What do I do?
Rename it to end in .apk using a file manager, then install it.
Why can I install other APKs but not this one?
Unknown-source permission is per app. Check it is enabled for whichever app you are opening the file from.
It fails on my Firestick but works on my phone. Why?
Older Firesticks are 32-bit and need armeabi-v7a. Storage limits and per-app permissions are also common causes on Fire TV.
