CloudStream Downloads Not Working — Every Fix
Grant storage permission in Android’s app settings. Without it, downloads fail silently.
Exclude CloudStream from battery optimisation. Aggressive power management kills background downloads on a lot of phones.

The fixes, in order
Grant storage permission
The most common cause, and it fails silently — no error, just a download that never starts.
- Go to Settings → Apps → CloudStream → Permissions.
- Enable Storage or Files and media.
- On newer Android versions, choose Allow management of all files if offered.
- Return to CloudStream and try again.
Check your free space
- Video files are large. A single episode can be several hundred megabytes.
- Check internal storage specifically, not just total space.
- Free up a few gigabytes and retry.
- Android sometimes refuses writes well before storage is genuinely full.
Change the download folder
Some devices block writes to certain paths, especially on newer Android versions.
- Go to Settings → Downloads in CloudStream.
- Change the download directory.
- Try the standard Downloads folder on internal storage.
- Avoid the SD card while troubleshooting — external storage causes a disproportionate share of these failures.
Exclude the app from battery optimisation
Aggressive power management is the top cause of downloads that start and then die.
- Go to Settings → Apps → CloudStream → Battery.
- Choose Unrestricted or Don’t optimise.
- On some brands this lives under a separate power or app-launch manager. Search your settings for “battery optimisation”.
- Also disable Data Saver for CloudStream if you download on mobile data.
Keep the app open and stay on one network
- Downloads are far more reliable with the app in the foreground.
- Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data mid-download interrupts it.
- Do not let the screen lock during large downloads while you are testing.
Try a different provider
- Not every source supports downloading.
- The same title from a different provider often downloads fine.
- If one provider never downloads anything, that extension is the problem.
Update your extensions
- Downloads use the same link resolution as playback.
- A broken extension cannot supply a downloadable link.
- Settings → Extensions → Update all.
- If playback is also failing, start there instead: no links found
Restart the app and retry
- Close CloudStream fully — swipe it away from recent apps.
- Delete the stuck download from the Downloads tab.
- Start it again from the title page.
The download button is missing
Not an error. Some content simply cannot be downloaded.
- Live content never can. Live TV and sports streams have no fixed file to save.
- Some sources do not support it. The extension only provides a stream, not a downloadable link.
- Some link types are stream-only even when others for the same title are not.
What to do: try a different provider for the same title. If none offer a download, that content is stream-only for you.
Downloads stuck at 0%
The download appears in the queue but never progresses.
- Storage permission is the first thing to check — see fix 1.
- The link resolution failed. The app queued the download but could not get a usable link. Try a different provider.
- The folder is not writable. Change it to internal Downloads.
- Delete and re-queue. Remove the stuck item from the Downloads tab and start it again.
- Queue too long? Try downloading a single episode rather than a whole season to test.
The file downloaded but will not play
- The file is incomplete despite showing as finished. Delete and download again.
- The codec is unsupported by your default player. Open it in VLC, which handles far more formats.
- The download was interrupted and resumed badly. Re-download rather than trying to repair it.
- You are opening the wrong file. Some downloads save alongside subtitle or metadata files. Make sure you are opening the video.
If it plays in VLC but not your default player, nothing is wrong with the file — your player just lacks that codec.
Where are my downloads saved?
- By default, into your device’s Downloads folder on internal storage.
- The path is configurable in Settings → Downloads inside CloudStream.
- Files play in any standard video player, not only in CloudStream.
- Use a file manager to browse to them directly.
Why they may not appear in your gallery
- Some folders are excluded from media scanning by Android.
- The files exist — your gallery app just is not indexing them.
- Open them through a file manager or VLC instead.
- Moving them into the standard Movies folder usually makes them appear.
Downloaded files disappeared
- A cleaner or optimiser app deleted them. Storage cleaners frequently remove large media files from non-standard folders. Exclude your download folder.
- The SD card was unmounted or remounted. Files on external storage can become unreachable.
- The download folder changed after an app update. Check the current path in settings, then browse the old one with a file manager.
- You cleared app data. This does not usually delete downloaded videos, but it does clear the app’s record of them, so they vanish from the Downloads tab while still existing on disk.
Important: uninstalling CloudStream does not delete your downloaded videos. They stay in your storage folder and need deleting separately if you want the space back.
What can and cannot be downloaded
Being clear about this saves time troubleshooting things that were never going to work.
- Films and episodes from on-demand sources
- Content where the extension supplies a direct file link
- Multiple episodes at once, using multi-select
- Live TV channels
- Live sports streams
- Anything where the source only provides a streaming session
- Depends entirely on the provider and the specific link.
- The same title may be downloadable from one source and stream-only from another.
The app cannot tell you in advance which links will support downloading. If the button is missing, that source does not offer it.
How to prevent it
- Grant storage permission properly when you first install, before you need it.
- Exclude CloudStream from battery optimisation on day one. This prevents most interrupted downloads.
- Keep downloads on internal storage. SD cards cause the majority of write failures.
- Download over Wi-Fi with the app open for large items.
- Exclude your download folder from cleaner apps.
- Download before you travel, not at the airport. A background download needs time.
- Keep free space. Running near full storage causes silent failures.
- Queue a few episodes at a time, not a whole series at once, on slower connections.
