Error fix

CloudStream Home Screen Empty — Why It Happens and How to Fix It

You installed CloudStream, opened it, and there is nothing there. No posters, no categories, no films — just an empty screen and a button that says None.
This is not a bug. Your app is working correctly.
CloudStream ships with no content of its own. It is a player, not a library. Until you add a repository and install extensions, there is genuinely nothing for it to show you.
Below is the complete setup, plus what to check if you have already done all that and it is still empty.

Why your home screen is empty

CloudStream has four layers, and you only installed the first one.

LayerWhat it isDo you have it?
1. The appThe player and plugin loader✅ Yes — you just installed it
2. A repositoryA list of available extensions❌ Not yet
3. ExtensionsModules that connect to sources❌ Not yet
4. ContentWhat you actually watch❌ Comes from layer 3

The app is layer one. Layers two and three are things you add yourself. Nothing appears until you do.

This is deliberate. CloudStream does not host, bundle or ship any media. That is why the download is small and why the app has no catalogue of its own.

The complete fix

Four steps, about three minutes.

  1. Step 1 — Add a repository
    • Open CloudStream and tap the Settings icon.
    • Tap Extensions.
    • Tap Add repository — the floating button at the bottom right.
    • Enter a name (optional, just for you).
    • In the URL box, type a shortcode. Start with cspr — the official repository.
    • Tap Add repository.
    • A warning appears about third-party extensions. Read it, then tap Open repository.

Shortcodes are much easier than full URLs, especially on a TV remote. More options: repository list

  2. Step 2 — Install extensions

Adding a repository does not install anything. This is the step most people miss.

    • You should now be looking at a list of extensions inside that repository.
    • Tap the download icon beside one to install it.
    • Install two or three, not twenty.
    • Installed extensions show a checkmark or an uninstall icon.
  3. Step 3 — Select a provider
    • Go back to the home screen.
    • Find the floating button that previously said None.
    • Tap it. Your installed extensions are now listed.
    • Select one.
  4. Step 4 — Content appears
    • The home feed loads with posters and categories from that provider.
    • Use the button to switch between providers at any time.
    • Use the Search tab to search all your installed extensions at once.

Still empty after installing extensions?

If you completed all four steps and the screen is still blank, one of these applies.

The button still says “None”
  • No extensions are actually installed. Adding a repository is not enough.
  • Go to Settings → Extensions, open your repository, and tap the download icon beside individual extensions.
  • Tapping an extension’s name opens it. Tapping the icon installs it.
Extensions are installed, but the home feed is blank
  • Some providers have no home feed at all. They only work through search. Try the Search tab and look for something popular.
  • The provider’s source website may be down. Try a different provider.
  • Update all extensions: Settings → Extensions → Update all.
  • Restart the app fully — swipe it away from recent apps, then reopen.
The repository added but shows no extensions
  • The repository is probably dead or has moved.
  • Open its source page in a browser and check the last commit date.
  • Over a year old, or archived? Replace it with an active one from the repository list.
Search works but the home screen does not
  • This is normal for several providers. Not every extension provides a browsable home feed.
  • Use global search as your main way in, or install a provider that does have a home feed.
Everything was working, now it is empty again
  • An app update can reset installed extensions when the plugin system changes.
  • Your repositories should still be listed — just reinstall the extensions.
  • Full guide: extensions disappeared

Common mistakes

The same handful of things trip up almost everyone.

  • Adding a repository and stopping there. The repository is only a catalogue. You still have to install extensions from it.
  • Tapping the extension name instead of the download icon. The name opens it; the icon installs it.
  • Not going back to the home screen after installing, so the provider selector was never touched.
  • Installing twenty extensions at once. This makes search slow and messy. Two or three is plenty.
  • Using a dead repository. If it was abandoned a year ago, nothing inside it will work.
  • Expecting content without any setup. There is no version of this app that comes pre-loaded. Any site claiming otherwise is describing something else.
  • Reinstalling the app to fix it. This changes nothing and wipes anything you had set up.

Why the app works this way

Worth understanding, because it explains a lot of the app’s other behaviour too.

  • The app stays small. No bundled catalogue means a lighter download and faster performance.
  • You choose your own sources. Nothing gets pushed into your feed by someone else’s decision.
  • The app can be updated independently of sources. Extensions update on their own schedule.
  • If a source disappears, only that extension is affected. The app keeps working.
  • No content ships with the app, which is a deliberate design choice by the project.

The cost of that design is exactly the confusion this page exists to solve: a first launch that looks broken but is not.

Frequently asked questions

Why is CloudStream empty after I install it?
Because it contains no content. You have to add a repository and install extensions before anything appears.
Is the empty home screen a bug?
No. It is how the app is designed to behave on first launch.
Do I need to reinstall the app?
No. Reinstalling changes nothing and deletes anything you had configured.
What is a repository?
A list of available extensions. It holds no media itself. Full explanation: repositories and extensions
I added a repository but nothing changed. Why?
Adding a repository only gives you a catalogue. You still need to install individual extensions from it.
Which repository should I add first?
The official one, shortcode cspr. It is maintained by the same community that builds the app.
How many extensions should I install?
Two or three to start. More makes search slower and results messier.
The provider button still says None. What now?
No extensions are installed. Open your repository in Settings → Extensions and tap the download icon beside individual extensions.
My extensions are installed but the home screen is still blank.
Some providers only work through search and have no home feed. Try the Search tab, or switch to a different provider.
Is there a version of CloudStream that comes with content already?
No. Any site offering one is offering something that is not CloudStream.
Why did my home screen go empty after an update?
An app update can reset extensions. Your repositories remain — reinstall the extensions from them.
Do I need an account to see content?
No. CloudStream has no account system at all.
