Error fix

CloudStream Extensions Disappeared — Why and How to Get Them Back

You updated CloudStream, opened it, and your providers are gone. The button says None again and the home screen is empty.

Nothing is lost. Your repositories are almost certainly still listed. You just need to reinstall the extensions from them, which takes about a minute.

Why it happens: when the app’s plugin system changes between versions, old extension files stop being valid. The app clears them out rather than loading something broken.

What actually happened

CloudStream keeps two separate things, and only one of them usually disappears.

What it isSurvives an update?
RepositoriesA list of URLs pointing to extension catalogues✅ Usually yes
ExtensionsThe actual plugin files installed on your device❌ Can be cleared

The distinction matters. Losing extensions is a two-minute inconvenience. Losing repositories means finding the URLs again.

Your library, watch history and settings are stored separately again, and are normally untouched by any of this.

Check first: go to Settings → Extensions. If your repository names are still listed there, you are in the easy case.

The fix

Three steps.

  1. Step 1 — Open your repositories
    • Go to Settings → Extensions.
    • Your repositories should still be listed by name.
    • Tap one to open its extension list.
  2. Step 2 — Reinstall the extensions
    • Tap the download icon beside each extension you want.
    • Install the same two or three you had before.
    • Installed ones show a checkmark or an uninstall icon.
  3. Step 3 — Select a provider
    • Go back to the home screen.
    • Tap the floating button that says None.
    • Your providers are listed again. Pick one.

While you are there, turn on automatic extension updates in the same Extensions screen. It reduces how often this bites you.

If your repositories are gone as well

Less common, but it happens after clearing data or reinstalling the app.

If you have a backup
  • Go to Settings → Backup → Restore backup.
  • Select your backup file.
  • Your repositories, library and settings come back.
  • Then reinstall the extensions as above.
If you do not have a backup
  • You will need to add the repositories again from scratch.
  • Our maintained list with shortcodes: CloudStream repositories
  • Shortcodes are much faster than hunting for URLs.
  • Once set up, make a backup immediately so this does not happen twice.

Why extensions disappear

Several causes, in rough order of how often they occur.

A major app update changed the plugin system
  • Extension files built for the old system are no longer valid.
  • The app removes them rather than loading something that would fail.
  • This is intentional behaviour, not a bug.
You cleared app data
  • This wipes everything: extensions, repositories, library, settings.
  • Clearing cache is safe. Clearing data is not.
You uninstalled and reinstalled the app
  • Uninstalling deletes everything. A fresh install starts empty.
  • Common when people downgrade or switch to a differently signed build.
A device cleaner app deleted the files
  • Storage cleaners sometimes remove app data folders they do not recognise.
  • Exclude CloudStream from any cleaner you use.
The extension update failed partway
  • An interrupted update can leave an extension in a broken state and the app drops it.
  • Reinstalling fixes this.
Battery optimisation killed the app mid-update
  • Aggressive power management on some phones closes background apps abruptly.
  • Exclude CloudStream from battery optimisation if this keeps happening.
The app was moved to an SD card
  • Plugin files can become unreachable when Android remounts external storage.
  • Keep the app on internal storage.

What a backup does and does not restore

Worth being precise about, because people assume a backup covers everything and are then surprised.

Restored from backup?
Repository list✅ Yes
Library and watch status✅ Yes
Watch progress✅ Yes
App settings✅ Yes
Extension files themselves❌ No
Downloaded video files❌ No — those live in storage

So after restoring a backup, you still reinstall the extensions. The backup tells the app which repositories you used; it does not carry the plugin binaries.

That is not a flaw. Extension files are version-specific, so restoring old ones onto a new app build would break things anyway.

Special cases

It happened right after updating the app

  • Expected behaviour on a major version change.
  • Repositories intact, extensions cleared.
  • Reinstall and carry on.
  • Check for extension updates immediately afterwards — the versions in the repository may also have been rebuilt for the new plugin system.

It happened after you downgraded

  • Older app builds cannot load extensions built for newer plugin systems.
  • Even after reinstalling, some extensions may refuse to work on the older build.
  • If that happens, the downgrade is the problem. Go back to the current version.

Extensions come back but return nothing

  • Different problem. The extensions installed fine but their sources are failing.
  • See no links found.

The repository list is there but opening it shows nothing

  • The repository itself has gone down or been abandoned.
  • Check its source page for recent activity.
  • Replace it with an active one: repository list

It keeps happening every few days

  • Not normal. Something on your device is clearing app data.
  • Check for cleaner or “optimiser” apps and exclude CloudStream.
  • Exclude it from battery optimisation.
  • Make sure the app is on internal storage, not an SD card.

How to prevent it

You cannot stop plugin system changes, but you can make them painless.

  • Take a backup before every app update. Settings → Backup → Create backup. Thirty seconds, and it covers you for everything except the extension files.
  • Store the backup outside the app folder — cloud storage or a PC. A backup sitting in the app’s own directory dies with the app.
  • Write down your repository shortcodes. Three or four short codes on a note means you can rebuild in two minutes even with no backup.
  • Turn on automatic extension updates so extensions stay current between app releases.
  • Exclude CloudStream from cleaner apps and battery optimisation.
  • Keep the app on internal storage.
  • Keep your setup small. Reinstalling three extensions is trivial. Reinstalling twenty is why people get frustrated.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my CloudStream extensions disappear?
Usually an app update changed the plugin system, so old extension files were cleared. Your repositories remain — just reinstall from them.
Did I lose my library and watch history?
Normally no. Those are stored separately and survive updates. Only clearing data or uninstalling removes them.
Do I have to add my repositories again?
Usually not. Check Settings → Extensions — they are normally still listed.
Does restoring a backup bring back my extensions?
It restores your repository list, settings and library, but not the extension files. You reinstall those from the restored repositories.
Can I stop this happening on future updates?
Not entirely — it is tied to plugin system changes. But a backup plus a note of your shortcodes makes it a two-minute job.
Is this a bug?
No. The app clears incompatible extensions deliberately rather than loading ones that would fail.
Why does it keep happening every few days?
Something is clearing your app data — usually a cleaner app or aggressive battery optimisation. Exclude CloudStream from both.
Should I clear data to fix it?
No. Clearing data deletes everything and makes it worse. Clearing cache is safe; clearing data is not.
My extensions came back but nothing plays.
Different problem. See no links found.
Do downloaded videos disappear too?
No. Downloaded files live in your storage folder and are not affected. They are also not removed when you uninstall.
How many extensions should I reinstall?
Two or three. More makes searching slower without improving results.
Can I avoid this by not updating?
Technically, but it is a bad trade. Falling behind costs you extension compatibility and security fixes.
